1 Abstract

An improved process and thermosetting coating compositions therefrom based on oil-free alkyds are described. Linear or pre-condensed polyesters carrying only terminal carboxyl groups which are the reaction product of n mols of hydroxy compounds with two free or latent hydroxyl groups and n + 1 mols of a dicarboxylic acid which will not form an anhydride are formed and then reacted with amine alcohols having the formula HO-(CX2)n-NH2 wherein n is 2 or 3, and X is equal or different and is standing for hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, or hydroxy-alkyl. The reaction product is combined with 10 to 60 percent of an aminoplast resin. The coating compositions provide films with outstanding flexibility and hardness and which are highly resistant to solvent and weathering conditions. The coating compositions are soluble in conventional organic coating solvents and can be rendered water soluble.
