A digital optical switch (100) includes an input waveguide (102) connected to a Y-shapednbranching waveguide (104) having two legs, each of the legs being connected to an outputnwaveguide (106,108). Each output waveguide (106,108) forms one waveguide of a directional coupler,nthe other waveguide (110,112) of which has its output dissipated into the substrate (101). Electrodes (114,116,118,122,124)nare connected to voltage sources (120,126,128) such that the switch is operative between twonstates. In the first state, transmission of optical energy is enhanced between the inputnwaveguide (102) and the first output waveguide (106) and inhibited between the input waveguide (102)nand the second output waveguide (108). Coupling between the first output waveguide (106) andnthe other waveguide (110) of its respective directional coupler is inhibited and couplingnbetween the second output waveguide (108) and the other waveguide (112) of its respectivendirectional coupler is enhanced. In the second state, transmission of optical energy isninhibited between the input waveguide (102) and the first output waveguide (106) and enhancednbetween the input waveguide (102) and the second output waveguide (108). Coupling betweennthe first output waveguide (106) and the other waveguide (110) of its respective directionalncoupler is enhanced and coupling between the second output waveguide (108) and thenother waveguide (112) of its respective directional coupler is inhibited.
