Description
This gene encodes a member of the matrix metalloproteinase family of extracellular matrix-degrading enzymes that are involved in tissue remodeling, wound repair, progression of atherosclerosis and tumor invasion. The encoded precursor undergoes proteolytic processing to generate a mature, zinc-dependent endopeptidase enzyme. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2016]
Predicted to enable metalloendopeptidase activity and peptidase activator activity. Acts upstream of or within hard palate development. Located in plasma membrane. Is expressed in heart; palatal shelf; palatal shelf epithelium; palatal shelf mesenchyme; and trigeminal ganglion. Orthologous to human MMP25 (matrix metallopeptidase 25).
