Isolated as an antifungal metabolite from the fungus Penicillium brevicompactum, this is a potent HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. This enzyme is the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis. This drug was never developped for therapeutics as it was found to have multiple side-effects. It is, however, used as the source for the widely used pravastatin. [Pubchem]    From: DrugBank
